Erin Lopez was a cat.

Technically speaking, she was a theater kid. She was also really friendly with the Goths, too, which made lunch a challenge. The Goths hid in the corner of the cafeteria, while the theater kids always ate on the small patch of lawn just outside the building. Conveniently, the grass was under a window right next to the Goth table.

That meant that, every day at lunch, Erin opened the window, sat on the edge, and visited with everyone. Her balance was good, she was five-foot-one if an inch so she fit really well...

If it fits, I sits. She even bought a t-shirt that said so.

This meant that Erin could be found literally anywhere on campus during a school day: on a bannister, atop a desk, atop or inside a cupboard if she was feeling antisocial or wanted to be warm on a cold day--sometimes she even sat hidden up in the trees on campus and jumped down on top of her friends to say hello.

On one day in particular, she was in Her Tree. The good one near the edge of the campus, a pine with heavy needles at the top and lots of twisting boughs. She could sit, even curl up, and watch the world go by while she read Frankenstein for the forty third time to amuse herself until her brother came to pick her up.

On that day, with that book, she saw nearly the whole thing go down--she heard the cry and looked down in just enough time to realize that three dumb jerks from school were...mugging Greg White and his want-her-to-be-my-Girlfriend-Greg-Just-DO-IT, Aislinn Somethingorother.

And Dominick Hurst, Superjock Supreme. He was a buffoon, he had big muscles, he took nothing seriously, and he annoyed the shit out of her with how good looking he was. No one with so little brains could possibly date her, she wouldn't allow it. She had standards.

But...he did something nice. Really nice: she had study hall and European History in the mornings with Greg White, and he was a good egg. Fresh from the chicken good--Aislinn was sweet, too. In one of her spots, she'd seen Aislinn rebuff Greg's attempt to ask her out, and she was so darn nice to him that the next day, she found free tickets in her locker to a local monster truck show. She'd heard Greg mention it in study hall...

After Erin heard him talking about it, and how Aislinn took him to the show, Erin started regularly slipping class notes from history into her locker whenever Greg missed school to take care of his mom. It saved Aislinn a trip to his history teacher--and Mr. Riordan would talk. For. Ever if you let him.

So, Dominick wasn't a total turd after all. Hmmm.

The day after the assault, Erin was perched on the railing by the steps leading into the English building, where some lockers were located. Laying on the railing, a scrolled stone banister that fit the curve of her back perfectly, she was reading her dogeared copy of Frankenstein again and ignoring literally everyone.

...everyone, of course, except the Dominick she was totally not looking at when he passed her by, and totally did not stop reading her book for so she could crane her neck and peek over the top of said book when he walked up to his locker and found a brown paper bag taped to the door.

And she was definitely not paying attention when he opened it to find a plastic box inside, containing a six inch diameter cupcake that needed the included plastic fork to eat it.
